Of all of the different types of backups that are out there for your devices in your company, there has been one method growing rapidly in popularity. Imaged based backups have quickly become known for it’s minimal downtime during disaster recovery, and for its reliability as well as efficiency. However, is this option the best one for you? Not all backup solutions are suited for every single business, but we here at RCS are here to help determine if it’s time for you and your organization to make the change to virtual backups.
Before going further we should know what exactly virtual backup is and how it works. Also referred to as Imaged Based Backup, this type of backup works by doing as the name implies and takes a picture of all of your devices files and information. By taking an image of your devices data, the backup has a much faster understanding and visual representation of how your device is setup and all of the files within it. How does it store all of the data though with just a picture of the data? It actually accomplishes this by making a virtual replica of your machine so that all of your information is stored in an exact copy of your device. So what is the benefit of this? Our partner Datto for example uses Image Based Backups to completely restore lost machines or damaged devices during disasters with minimal downtime thanks to the virtual copy that they produce and store. Incidences where only a single file is corrupted are also efficiently handled as Image Based Backups are able to go back and replace the individual file that has been compromised with a later clean version while the rest of the device’s files and programs can keep running without being interrupted.
With all of these benefits what would be the downside to switching from File Backups to Image Based? The price is primarily the reason as File Based Backups are far more common with multiple vendors providing cheap solutions. However File Backups take up a lot of space as they store and save files form your device. They also take a long period of time depending on how many files you have and how large they are, while Image Based backups only needs the picture it takes of the files which saves space and time as seen in this short video provided by our partner Datto. If you’re unsure if you should make the change to Image Based or even would like to know of other solutions outside of File and Image Based Backups then give RCS a call and one of our certified technicians will be happy to give you a free consultation.
