So you’ve started to look into Search Engine Optimization and want to improve your sites visibility online, but with the abundance of SEO advice and tricks posted everywhere how will you know what is sound and helpful advice and what is an unnecessary hurdle to try and cross? For just starting implementation of SEO practices into your site it is important to get the basics done first as they are the primary foundation for a strong site.
To start with, you should take a look at you URL for your site and ensure that it is as concise and clear as possible. There should be no underscores in the URL name and if possible under 15 characters long. It is important for the URL, also known as your domain name, to be so concise because in the long run it will be much easier for potential viewers to search for and remember as well. The reason there should be no underscores within the name is actually for a technical reason in that for coders it is often seen as a bad practice to use underscores because search engines and browsers will not always read or register the underscore portion of the domain name.
Once you have checked your domain name, it is time to inspect your homepage’s meta data, or also known as description tag. This portion of your site is the small bit of content that is seen and read on search engine page results as viewers are looking for sites to go to. These descriptions must always be a clear and very brief summary of what your site is and why it matters. This description should never be larger then 160 characters. To better visualize how short and concise this description tag is, here is an example of our description tag which is 151 characters long:
RCS bridges the gap between businesses and IT solutions with customized IT services and consulting in Inland Empire, San Gabriel Valley, and Riverside.
Not very long is it? Think of it more of a quick sales pitch to all of your potential viewers and clients. This portion of text should have as many keywords that describe your website as possible so that when individuals search those keywords, search engines will quickly identify that and display your site with the matching words they have searched for.
Speaking of keywords, keep in mind that more does not always mean better! Vague keywords will not benefit you or your site and will not help search engines understand what your site is about and thus display it in appropriate areas. For example a poor keyword for the RCS website to have would be only “computers.” This one word is too broad for search engines and isn’t very descriptive or helpful for anyone. A stronger and more useful keywords for RCS to use would be “IT Support Services” as it then clearly describes what is on the site and what sort of content is to be expected. Keywords are also extremely important to include inside ALL image file names and alt tags for images as it then incorporates them smoothly into the site and gives keeps the content and information on your site much more focused and searchable online.
For the final basic tips we will discuss in this article what is important for SEO and what search engines look for has to do with the actual layout of your site now. Be sure that on your homepage at least there are three headers that separate and clearly label content so that search engines can quickly identify content and understand what information you deem the most important on your site. Also whenever possible, create links within your site that lead to other pages within your site. This is called “building internal links.” This not only helps viewers easily navigate and jump around in your site when they see content quickly links and leads to other information they are looking for, but also allows for search engines to recognize that this is not simply a random page with only one possible entry point and has multiple links and ways for viewers to access said information. With all of those links it will then be extremely simple to follow the last tip which is to always have all pages within your site be easily accessible and be no more then three clicks away from your homepage. This allows for the viewers to have the most user friendly experience as possible while visiting your website and possibly convert to a regular visitor.
