Having a security certificate (SSL) on your website often gives the illusion of high security and gives a false sense of comfort to the website owner. While having an SSL certificate for your site does provide some level of security it should never be used as the only line of defense. Why is that though? Is it necessary to have this certificate at all? Why is it so encouraged?
To answer these questions we have to understand what an SSL certificate actually does. First, let’s imagine our computer as a house, and an SSL certificate as a fence surrounding it. The fence looks secure and sends off the message to people walking by to stay out, and also keeps out smaller threats such as animals or anyone without a key to unlock and get past the fence. However, fences can unfortunately be climbed on and jumped over, now becoming rather just an inconvenient obstacle for robbers to get past.
If an SSL certificate just acts as a fence then why purchase it in the first place? There are actually several good reasons to still purchase an SSL certificate for your site even though it still means you will need to invest in other security measures for your site. Google, along with other search engines, strongly encourages all sites to invest in getting an SSL certificate and even rewards sites with an SSL with a higher-ranking SEO score. It also allows visitors on your site to feel safer while either making purchases or even just browsing through the pages.
So should you get an SSL certificate? Yes, but not solely for security purposes. While an SSL certificate does provide some protection, it is becoming increasingly more valued for SEO enhancing purposes and for giving a feeling of security to visitors then for just defense purposes. These security certificates can seem rather pricey or overwhelming to consider if you absolutely have to have one.
